Hawaii Pet Photographer and a yappy dog

Friday, August 13th, 2010

Yep that’s right ….Hawaii Pet Photographer Deb McGuire just photographed the yappiest dog ever. From the time I arrived to the time I left Chloe barked and barked and barked. Only stopping briefly to grab a dog cookie from my trusty Oahu Pet Photography treat bag. It’s a wonder I got any closed-mouth shots at all. I’m sure her neighbors appreciated the early morning wake up call…bark on Chloe!

His name is Custer and he is an expert in detecting drugs and alcohol in Hawaii schools. I (Deb McGuire Pet Photography, hawaiipetphotos, com) recently was commissioned to photograph this Maui dog on his family estate(it’s been in his family since the mid 18oo’s). Custer is 9 years old and is a golden retriever. Confused? I know he doesn’t look like one. He’s called a red fox because of a recessive gene in his DNA. His  facial fur grays faster than the rest of the body fur. He has one toy and he loves it!!! It makes him completely bonkers. It was a blast photographing him. Check out his work website http://interquestk9.com.

Oahu Pet Photography and a blue-eyed doxie

Her name is Reiko(which means grateful/thankful child in Japanese). She has the most amazing blue eyes on a funny little dachshund body. I first met her at the 2010 Hawaii Wiener Derby. Enjoy the pictures below.

Reality TV: Hawaii Pet Photographer’s Background Noise

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Some in the blogosphere may wonder: WHAT DOES HAWAII’s PET PHOTOGRAPHER WATCH WHILE CREATING MAGIC?  If you are among those asking, then you may need help OR an answer.  The answer is hawaiipetphotos.com “watches” Reality TV.

OK, OK, we enjoy it, but the reality of Reality TV is that you can follow the lack of story-line on audio without looking at the video.  So, when reviewing proofs or touching up images, we have our shows on in the background.

Sunday… “Amazing Race” and “The Apprentice”

Monday… “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette”

Tuesday… “Biggest Loser”

Wednesday… “Top Chef”

Thursday… “Survivor”

Friday and Saturday……..well, it’s Friday and Saturday

We are waiting for “Big Brother,” our intial addiction.  This show hooked us with Dr. Will.  We became fascinated by the ability of one guy in a group of strangers manipulating the entire group to adhere to his will…literally and figuratively.  From that point, we compared all others to him.  We include Russell of Survivor to this.

NEWS BREAK: RUPERT SENT PACKING FROM SURVIVOR:HEROES VERSUS VILLAINS!!!!!!!!

The current “Survivor: Heroes versus Villains” has been particularly intriguing.  Russell is scheming and forming alliances with all the women.  Rupert and Sandra have discerned his intent, but they are powerless in the face of his machinations.  Parvati has proven that she may be the best Survivor ever, she manipulates with silent precision.  Russell could never match her looks and silent cunning.

Although we are fans of the Biggest Loser, the basis for choosing the contestants seems to reward a lifetime of food abuse.  These people are not just fat, they are morbidly obese.  Unfortunately, it seems that many of the contestants and even past champions return to their wicked ways.

While we like the Bachelor and the Bachelorette, the inclusion of Jake and even Melissa on the past two seasons of “Dancing With The Stars,” has sunk the latter to below Kathy Griffin’s D list.

We no longer watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” since the focus moved from the gadgets and furnishings to almost exclusively focusing on tugging heart strings.  And, what about the pets?  There are never pets!!

“American Idol” has too many seasoned pros with record contracts now.  Also, no Paula…no Deb McGuire Photography!  With Simon leaving, who will be forced to become the “bad cop?”

As to “Real House Wives,” what is “REAL” about them?

We like “Flipping Out,” because Jeff needs psychotherapy.  We also enjoy “Million Dollar Listing,” because all three of the boys are train wrecks.

Deb McGuire Photography would like to know one thing:  ”When Reality Show contestants are away from home for months at a time, who is watching their pets?”

Hawaii Pet Photos-Gray Days for a Gray Cat!

HawaiiPetPhotos.com's own Sham-Rock naps in Coconut Tree

http://www.hawaiipetphotos.com

HawaiiPetPhotos.com is suffering through climate change.  Maybe our blood is thin, now, but these cloudy April, Windward Oahu days have been cold.  We have pulled out the sweat shirts to fight the morning chill.  On top of the overcast, the Trades have been blowing briskly from the North.

The chill affects us all, but Sham-Rock seems most upset.  In fact, he seems downright downtrodden.

Although Shammy is an indoor cat, he relishes his outside time.  He starts each morning with a walk on a leash…yes, on a leash (covered in an earlier blog).   Then, throughout the day, Shammy sits at the kitchen door and begs to go to the courtyard.  After dinner, he gets special time outside with his Dad.

The last few days, however, the Global Cooling (my husband believes he coined that phrase, so he considers it trademarked) has kept him indoors.   He has actually spent the after dinner time begging to return to the kitchen.

Does the lack of sunlight affect cats like it can affect humans?  GOOGLE!  I basically posed that question to the Google search engine.  And, well, apparently, according to the World-Wide-Web, they can.

I read a few entries, but I hit one that had Freud in the title.  Hey, I figured if they had Freud in the title, they had to know pet psychology.  Sunlight stimulates hormone release that uplifts the feline mood.  Gray day equals gray cat…in Shammy’s case literally and figuratively.

We need the Kahunas to start praying for some Sun, a little Global Warming if you please. (Al Gore copyrighted that one).

Visitors to my Deb McGuire Photography Facebook page( http://www.facebook.com/debmcguirephotography ) have been treated to photographs taken by Sham-rock the cat. For Christmas, we gave Sham-rock a small digital camera. We set the frequency to take pictures every one minute, attach the camera to his collar and send Shammy on his way.

While it’s not one of my high-end Canons, my Canon cannot go everywhere a cat can go. Over and under, around and through, all the prepositions seem possible. Hanging approximately 4 inches above the ground, the camera captures our world from a cat’s perspective.

When Shammy has exhausted his creativity for the day, we remove his camera and download his latest creations. To say they are interesting, unusual and thought-provoking(we often ask “What the heck is that”) is an understatement..

We just may have yet another photographer in the family.

Hawaiipetphotos.com asked friends, associates, and connections for help with a “little problem.” In the midst of my lamentations on LinkedIn, a person from one of my network groups sent me a private inquiry: “I’ve been thinking about becoming a pet photographer, and I would like some advice.”  Thankfully, she was not living in Hawaii, but I guess if she was, I would have suggested that she grab a domain name close to mine and “tag-along” for the ride.

Curious, I began to “Google” pet related product and services. I started with “Pet Photography,” of course. 474,000 entries for “Pet Photography.” A “Pet Photographer” search yielded 73,500 entries. Amazingly, there are 1,090,000 “Paw-printers” with 278,000 paw-print photographers.  My guess is not all of those are pet related businesses.  There are 8220 “Paw-tography” entries with 2720 entries for “Paw-tographers.”  There are fewer “Pawtographers” practicing “Pawtography” sans the hyphen. “Petographers” seem more plentiful with 33,100 entries.

With those numbers, I was thankful that my main focus is my love for the furry friends.

I continued my searches with Pet Products. I typed in pet jewelry, doggie couture, and feline fashion. I looked at pet foods and pet spa products. I found 5853 retail entries for pet strollers. I thought back to the 2009 Pet Expo at the Blaisdell where we had to look twice when we saw a baby in a buggy. There are 25,355 pet bath entries. Pet walks, pet trimmers, and pet beds are offered in the tens of thousands.

Wow, this is baby boom sparking a pet boom feeding a pet product explosion. If the Gen-X’ers follow the lead, the market for “K-9″ things and “Kitty do-dad” should be sky high. And if young people are smart they will explore veterinary studies or doggie psychology or the newly popular pet whispering. There are currently 42,800 sites for Pet Whisperer(s) by the way.

For hours, I searched. What started with curiosity, continued in amazement. At the end, Hawaiipetphotos.com was in need of a spa (181,000 of those for pets). So, needing a pet sitter (1,060,000 entries) I called a Pet Nanny (108,000 “Google” listings) and left for Kahala for a little pampering.

All this stress over the letter “s!”

I have had a wonderful year building my pet photography business here in Hawaii. I am grateful to all the wonderful furry friends and their parents who I have gotten to know. My website http://www.hawaiipetphotos.com along with the wonderful pet photos I have taken has been a great source of pride . I have literally put hundreds of hours of hard work and all of my passion into my business . I have spent even more hours donating my time and services to Hawaii’s many charitable organizations. I have been fortunate to become very successful in a very short time. And I am most grateful for that.

But, now all those efforts are being threatened. It seems as though a lesser known part-time photographer on this island has come up with a domain name one letter off from mine. Coincidence, I don’t think so. I have never been a fan of riding on someone else’s coat-tails. What sense of accomplishment do you have if you don’t do it yourself. So don’t be fooled!

“Hawaii pet photo” is not Deb McGuire’s www.hawaiipetphotos.com. Remember don’t forget the “S” in photos. That’s hawaiipetphotos.com, HawaiiPetPhotos.com, HAWAIIPETPHOTOS.COM!

OAHU PET PHOTOGRAPHER SAYS GOOD-BYE, FRIEND

Deb McGuire, Hawaii Pet Photography, was shocked and saddened by the passing of her “nephew” Choco.

Choco was an eleven-year-old Lab that was abandoned by the previous owner of our home in New Bern, NC. Confused? So were we, when in 2000, we arrived at our recently-purchased, 1890-Victorian, to find a 2-year-old Chocolate Lab still running in our backyard. We called our realtor, who called the young couple who had previously owned our home. “The Molinares (next door) have agreed to take care of him until we get settled in a new home with a yard. Then, we’ll come and get him.” They never came back.

Rod and BC Molinare took Choco, and over time, they realized that Choco was theirs. Choco thrived. We all loved Choco. Rod called him, “Dawg.” Rod trained his “Dawg” to be a retriever. BC called Choco, “Puddin’.” She fed him ice cream and took him on walks…or more importantly, “Puddin’” took BC for walks. Tim (Oahu Deb’s husband) ran with Choco 3-4 times a week. The runs kept both of them in shape. Our cats…well, they thought he was a chocolate, slobbery blur, and they tolerated him.

When we were leaving New Bern, we told BC and Rod that we would bring Choco to live with us if anything happened to them. We meant it then, and we meant it til the day Choco passed. We loved Choco, BC, and Rod…still do.

So, Hawaiipetphotos.com has a heavy heart, but we know that 9 years ago, a special couple gave a special, furry friend the best life that any “Dawg” could ever had.
