Hawaiipetphotos.com asked friends, associates, and connections for help with a “little problem.” In the midst of my lamentations on LinkedIn, a person from one of my network groups sent me a private inquiry: “I’ve been thinking about becoming a pet photographer, and I would like some advice.”  Thankfully, she was not living in Hawaii, but I guess if she was, I would have suggested that she grab a domain name close to mine and “tag-along” for the ride.

Curious, I began to “Google” pet related product and services. I started with “Pet Photography,” of course. 474,000 entries for “Pet Photography.” A “Pet Photographer” search yielded 73,500 entries. Amazingly, there are 1,090,000 “Paw-printers” with 278,000 paw-print photographers.  My guess is not all of those are pet related businesses.  There are 8220 “Paw-tography” entries with 2720 entries for “Paw-tographers.”  There are fewer “Pawtographers” practicing “Pawtography” sans the hyphen. “Petographers” seem more plentiful with 33,100 entries.

With those numbers, I was thankful that my main focus is my love for the furry friends.

I continued my searches with Pet Products. I typed in pet jewelry, doggie couture, and feline fashion. I looked at pet foods and pet spa products. I found 5853 retail entries for pet strollers. I thought back to the 2009 Pet Expo at the Blaisdell where we had to look twice when we saw a baby in a buggy. There are 25,355 pet bath entries. Pet walks, pet trimmers, and pet beds are offered in the tens of thousands.

Wow, this is baby boom sparking a pet boom feeding a pet product explosion. If the Gen-X’ers follow the lead, the market for “K-9″ things and “Kitty do-dad” should be sky high. And if young people are smart they will explore veterinary studies or doggie psychology or the newly popular pet whispering. There are currently 42,800 sites for Pet Whisperer(s) by the way.

For hours, I searched. What started with curiosity, continued in amazement. At the end, Hawaiipetphotos.com was in need of a spa (181,000 of those for pets). So, needing a pet sitter (1,060,000 entries) I called a Pet Nanny (108,000 “Google” listings) and left for Kahala for a little pampering.

All this stress over the letter “s!”

Oahu Pet Photographer

I have had a wonderful year building my pet photography business here in Hawaii. I am grateful to all the wonderful furry friends and their parents who I have gotten to know. My website http://www.hawaiipetphotos.com along with the wonderful pet photos I have taken has been a great source of pride . I have literally put hundreds of hours of hard work and all of my passion into my business . I have spent even more hours donating my time and services to Hawaii’s many charitable organizations. I have been fortunate to become very successful in a very short time. And I am most grateful for that.

But, now all those efforts are being threatened. It seems as though a lesser known part-time photographer on this island has come up with a domain name one letter off from mine. Coincidence, I don’t think so. I have never been a fan of riding on someone else’s coat-tails. What sense of accomplishment do you have if you don’t do it yourself. So don’t be fooled!

“Hawaii pet photo” is not Deb McGuire’s www.hawaiipetphotos.com. Remember don’t forget the “S” in photos. That’s hawaiipetphotos.com, HawaiiPetPhotos.com, HAWAIIPETPHOTOS.COM!

Deb McGuire, Hawaii Pet Photographer, recently photographed a pair of beautiful dogs with black fur.

Many black dog owners have expressed concern about our ability to capture their pets.

Black fur requires lighting and background awareness. Lit from the wrong direction, shadows, mid-tones, and highlights can blend and “flatten.” If you put a black dog in front of a dark or shadowy background, then you risk losing the subject entirely.

Deb McGuire, Oahu Pet Photographer, says, “Bring it on!” Light awareness and “no fear” are the keys to photographing black fur.

Oahu Pet Photographer’s Magic Goes Walkabout

Magic, the elder of our two cats and the cover-cat for hawaiipetphotos.com, is an independent soul.

When we adopted Magic, she had lived most if not all of her life on the streets of a small North Carolina city.  She was “bird-crazy,” which meant that when she was chasing a potential feathered-meal, she would not pay attention to her surroundings (read CARS!).  Eventually, we fell in love with her and brought her inside.

For a couple months, our screened-in-porch suffered the brunt of Magic’s desire to chase food.  Living up to her name, she could exploit the tiniest of holes or the smallest of opportunities and “POOF!” Gone!

Finally, we reached a compromise.  We would teach her to walk on a leash, and that would give her exposure to the outdoors without the risk of her running in front of cars.

Unfortunately, Magic sometimes has the need to just be free.  She goes walkabout.  Although the frequency of her journeys abroad has decreased as she has aged, occasionally, when we have thought she has lost the desire, she surprises us.

Saturday, Magic went walkabout.  We knew she would come home…and she did.  Thankfully, like most of her recent excursions, this was a short one.  Magic may never outgrow her wandering ways.
