ONE DAY!!! One Day until the second loudest night on the Hawaii calendar. After New Years, the 4th of July on Oahu is insane. PETS ARE NOT FANS!
Hawaii legislators debate legal (and illegal) fireworks as the biennial celebration of noise quickly approaches.
Without jumping on an anti-firework soapbox, I remind only that our pets hear better than we, two-legged humans do…THEY DON’T LIKE THE LOUD BANGS!
So here are some helpful hints:
1. Keep your pets indoors. OK, I know. This is Hawaii…
2. Create a calming environment. Talk to your pet. Let them know that the pets are in charge and that you know, that they know that when the decibel level reaches its highest level, it is time for a puppy or kitty massage.
3. If you are using blasting caps and dynamite to mark your festive fourth, PLEASE keep your pets away…Put them in your Oahu Pet Bunker. That way when you and your human family members have been vaporized by your newly invented MOTHER OF ALL BACKYARD BOMBS, your pet will survive to mourn your passing.

As I write this, the cats are being silly. Shammy has snuggled up to the copy machine and sleeps on his back with all four paws in the air. Magic has climbed inside a shopping bag, rolled into a ball, and fallen asleep.
Someone snuck a python into Hawaii. The 9-foot snake is an illegal alien… of the scaly variety. The owner turned over his contraband reptile under Hawaii’s amnesty law. The discovery and removal of non-indigenous species is absolutely essential to the preservation of Oahu (and all the Hawaiian Islands) eco-system.
While the snake is currently at the Honolulu Zoo, that home is temporary. The snake is female. The zoo is allowed only two non-venomous snakes by permit. Once a mainland home is found, she will go their in order to insure that she births no keiki here.
Other Pet News (HawaiiPetPhotos is downloading Mr. Pigglesworth Photos):
Missed the Pet Blessing. This passed Sunday, June 6th, the annual “Pet Blessing” was held at the Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu. Since we had just done the Hawaii Kai Pet Walk and since Magic and Sham-Rock would not have appreciated being dragged out of their sunbeams, we bypassed the event. Although given the look and the position that Shammy is currently in, we probably should have gone. Would a blessing have cured his “frenzies?” Magic wants to know.
Mr. Pigglesworth is very cute!!
Good-bye to the “Honolulu Advertiser:”
When the staff said good-bye, Leslie Kawamoto wrote the following about her blog and Sunday column “Island Tails:”
“The last two years I’ve written a blog and Sunday column, Island Tails, about my favorite subject — pets! I thoroughly enjoyed writing about all kinds of animals, their special owners and the many animal advocates in the community. I will miss hearing from readers who would share tales about their pets. Some stories were sad, some heartwarming.”
Leslie had included Deb McGuire Photography (hawaiipetphotos.com) in a past “Island Tails.” Another columnist/blogger, Charlie Meminger is a friend and neighbor. We send a heartfelt “Aloha” to all the Advertiser staff and employees. This is a tough time to be looking for something new. Our prayers are with you.

Hickam AFB "Walk and Wag" 5K
Hickam AFB invited Deb McGuire Photography to be a part of the Base’s first annual “Walk and Wag.” The canine plus human 5K walk/run (mostly walk) was held at the Fort Kam waterfront. After the physical stuff was complete, a couple friendly competitions like “what doggie looks most like its owner” and “which pup wore the best costume” were judged by the Hawaiian Humane Society.
Shammy has repositioned and is now in a ball, sleeping.

This morning, Deb McGuire Photography, HawaiiPetPhotos.com, was snapping photos, meeting and greeting as part of the 6th Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk.
The event began and ended at the Hawaii Kai Park & Ride. Thoughtfully, the event offered either a short or long course option. The short course was… well… for the vertically challenged canine participants.
We were in the park super early. Why? We desired the best, most primo location for our booth. Mary Long (Hawaii Pet Magazine) told us that we had better get there early. With that ominous warning, we barely slept. We had nightmares that people were jumping the fence and building their booths while we lay snug in our bed. In fact, from roughly 2:30 onward, one or both of us was awake. Such was our anxiety. We left before dawn and earlier than planned. But, alas,we were not the first to arrive.
After being told where we could and could not erect our canopy, we began to set up. Ironically, another group was setting up right across from us. It was the events official photo booth. Yes, the two independent vendors who were in the park before even the sun had made its appearance were the two photographers!!!
Not long after, Mary Long and her husband Toby showed up. “I’m sorry Deb. I swear last year, this place was packed early!”
Our early arrival was for the best, as our booth takes a little longer to set up. You can’t rush perfection! (just kidding)
The event itself was fantastic. Hui Ilio Hawaii sponsored the event. As a pet lover and photographer, I understand the need for safe, friendly places for dogs to play. There are far too few places like that here. Hui Ilio was founded for just that cause. The Hawaii Kai Dog Park is the first of what we hope will be many in Hawaii. The folks from Hui Ilio were incredibly appreciative of their sponsors, their volunteers and the venders.
Several of our furry and human friends turned out for the event. As previously mentioned, Mary Long with husband Toby was there from “Hawaii Pet Magazine.” and Erin Gerwig of “Dogwalker Etc!” as well as many others.
Overall, Deb McGuire Photography, HawaiiPetPhotos.com, says: WHAT A TRULY AWESOME DAY!

Deb and Cranberry, a potbelly pig
Even while serving as the official photographer for the Second Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby 2010, Deb McGuire was able to meet new friends and greet old friends… for those that we missed, Auntie Gin-Gin picked up the slack.
Of course, the Doxies were the focus of our day. The HWD (Sheree’s inventive acronym) was an awesome success. We enjoyed meeting all the doxies and seeing a couple we have already befriended. It was wonderful that Mahlon volunteered to MC, and it was great to see him, again.
Mary Long, of Hawaii Pet Magazine, stopped by to let us know that Deb and Tim were baking in the sun. She gave us sunscreen that that kept us from burning even more that we already had. Tim’s bald head would have been a total mess even with a hat. MAHALO, MARY!
Erin Gerwig of “DogWalker Etc.” brought Isabella and Libby to our booth. We had not seen them since our photosession for Erin’s website. MAHALO, ERIN! We love their doggy kisses!
Ron Darby and Denby Dung were there to shoot a segment for an upcoming “Pet Hui.” Ron actually convinced Sheree to allow Denby gate opening privilege during one of the practice runs. You could tell by the wild cheering from the gathered, doxie-loving masses, that Denby’s appearance was one of the highlights of the day. The whoops that ensued as Denby “loosed-the-hounds” is something this photography team will not soon forget! The hilarity followed… the practice rounds were pre genius.
Tammy Kubo, Hawaii Pet Nanny stopped by to say ALOHA!
Entrants and attendees came from all over the Hawaiian Islands and beyond.
At the end of the day, we met “Cranberry,” the pot belly pig. Cranberry had a huge crowd of humans and dogs around him. Deb turned model and had her photo taken with Cranberry.
IMO, the Hawaii Wiener Derby is FUN…an absolute MUST-SEE EVENT!!!

Oahu’s own, Deb McGuire Photography (aka hawaiipetphotos.com) just returned from the Second Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby. Deb was official photographer and a sponsor of this years event.
Sheree Revilla, Dachshund owner and enthusiast, is the Wiener Derby’s driving force. The Huntington Beach native had experienced the wildly popular races on the mainland, and she knew that doxie owners and lovers here would enjoy. So, Sheree found sponsors and a venue, and the event has exploded on the Hawaiian scene.
It’s absolutely hysterical fun!
As was true last year, the winner is not always the main focus. Especially in the puppy races and early heats for the adult dogs, the chaos at the starting gate is pure entertainment. When the dogs lose their focus (or never have focus), they run in no particular direction or not at all. This year, Sheree decided to allow a few practice runs for the entrants. The words “practice” and “run” barely describe those early heats, though. One dog in particular refused to leave the box. In fact, even with his owner standing directly in front of him, he was not coming out. In another heat, two dogs decided to wait for their owners together in the box of a third dog who left the track altogether.
This year featured a puppy competition with two heats and a final. The Puppy Champion for 2010 is “Winston.” The runner-up is “Kainula.”
In the adult category, there were eleven heats, two semi-finals and the final. The Second Annual Hawaii Wiener Derby 2010 Champion is “Lucian.” ”Dash” finished second and “Captain” took third.
Ron “Ace” Darby was on hand to block shots, jostle the photographer in mid-focus, wreak havoc, cause chaos, and otherwise get excellent footage for “The Pet Hui.” Ron interviewed the owners. He also wired a few as they yelled/pleaded with their doxies to run toward them at the finish line.
For the second year, the Wiener Derby was part of the Hawaiian Humane Society’s Canine Game Day. Besides Deb, “Pet’s Discount,” “Pacific Paws: Doggie Resort & Spa,” “Farmaesthetics: Fine Herbal Skincare from the Farm,” “Bark Ave.,” “Barking Dog Blankets: Handmade with Aloha,” and “Hormel” also contributed to the event.
Mahlon Moore lent his silky, toned voice as the announcer/Master of Ceremonies. Volunteers from the Mortar Board Honor Society of UH provided stellar support. Two of the Manoa scholars, Jay and Sharon, were particularly awesome in support of… you guessed it… Deb McGuire Photography. Auntie Gin-Gin pulled double duty as a booth-babe but also head honcho.

Hawaii Pet Photographer was amazed to see that “The Tiger Poem” by William Blake has trended radioactive on Google:
Tiger Tiger burning bright,
In the forests of the night;
What immortal hand or eye.
Could frame thy fearful symmetry?
In what distant deeps or skies.
Burnt the fire of thine eyes?
On what wings dare he aspire?
What the hand, dare seize the fire?
And what shoulder, & what art,
Could twist the sinews of thy heart?
And when thy heart began to beat.
What dread hand? & what dread feet?
What the hammer? what the chain,
In what furnace was thy brain?
What the anvil? what dread grasp.
Dare its deadly terrors clasp?
When the stars threw down their spears
And watered heaven with their tears:
Did he smile His work to see?
Did he who made the lamb make thee?
Tiger Tiger burning bright,
In the forests of the night:
What immortal hand or eye,
Dare frame thy fearful symmetry?
Deb McGuire Photography loves cats of any size. Still, we admit we were confused by the web’s fascination.
The fervor seems to have been driven by an exhibition at Seattle’s Roq La Rue Gallery. Deb McGuire has been to that gallery…following her husband who is a gallery fanatic. That explains part of the fascination. Then, there is that other Tiger. Golf fans calm yourself, Eldrick Tont Woods may well recover from his “neck problems” in time to play in Jack’s Memorial Tournament.
Oahu Pet Photographer appreciates any reference to Tigers and Bears.

Some in the blogosphere may wonder: WHAT DOES HAWAII’s PET PHOTOGRAPHER WATCH WHILE CREATING MAGIC? If you are among those asking, then you may need help OR an answer. The answer is hawaiipetphotos.com “watches” Reality TV.
OK, OK, we enjoy it, but the reality of Reality TV is that you can follow the lack of story-line on audio without looking at the video. So, when reviewing proofs or touching up images, we have our shows on in the background.
Sunday… “Amazing Race” and “The Apprentice”
Monday… “The Bachelor” or “The Bachelorette”
Tuesday… “Biggest Loser”
Wednesday… “Top Chef”
Thursday… “Survivor”
Friday and Saturday……..well, it’s Friday and Saturday
We are waiting for “Big Brother,” our intial addiction. This show hooked us with Dr. Will. We became fascinated by the ability of one guy in a group of strangers manipulating the entire group to adhere to his will…literally and figuratively. From that point, we compared all others to him. We include Russell of Survivor to this.
NEWS BREAK: RUPERT SENT PACKING FROM SURVIVOR:HEROES VERSUS VILLAINS!!!!!!!!
The current “Survivor: Heroes versus Villains” has been particularly intriguing. Russell is scheming and forming alliances with all the women. Rupert and Sandra have discerned his intent, but they are powerless in the face of his machinations. Parvati has proven that she may be the best Survivor ever, she manipulates with silent precision. Russell could never match her looks and silent cunning.
Although we are fans of the Biggest Loser, the basis for choosing the contestants seems to reward a lifetime of food abuse. These people are not just fat, they are morbidly obese. Unfortunately, it seems that many of the contestants and even past champions return to their wicked ways.
While we like the Bachelor and the Bachelorette, the inclusion of Jake and even Melissa on the past two seasons of “Dancing With The Stars,” has sunk the latter to below Kathy Griffin’s D list.
We no longer watch “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition,” since the focus moved from the gadgets and furnishings to almost exclusively focusing on tugging heart strings. And, what about the pets? There are never pets!!
“American Idol” has too many seasoned pros with record contracts now. Also, no Paula…no Deb McGuire Photography! With Simon leaving, who will be forced to become the “bad cop?”
As to “Real House Wives,” what is “REAL” about them?
We like “Flipping Out,” because Jeff needs psychotherapy. We also enjoy “Million Dollar Listing,” because all three of the boys are train wrecks.
Deb McGuire Photography would like to know one thing: ”When Reality Show contestants are away from home for months at a time, who is watching their pets?”

Oahu Pet Photographer, Deb McGuire, was checking up with Starla (chihuahua…Chad Rogers…Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing”). We happened upon an item in the blogosphere: “Million Dollar Listing’s” Starla (the Chihuahua) is Sitting High.” The article was written by Ann Brenoff and can be found at http://www.luxist.com/2010/04/20/million-dollar-listings-starla-the-chihuahua-is-sitting-hig/.
For those who do not want to read the article: STARLA HAS A SEAT AT THE TABLE. Hammacher Schlemmer sells a “chair” that attaches to the edge of your dining room table. While we long ago gave up our efforts to keep our cats from joining us at dinner time, most people would draw the line at giving their furry friends a seat at the table.
In fairness to Chad, the article does not specify whether Chad actually purchased the item or just allowed Starla to model the chair, we have to assume that any pet who has legal standing, probably has a seat at the table.
Rest assured, hawaiipetphotos.com will continue to follow Starla and her strangely coifed human Chad.

Wall Street watched the Greek protests and the Dow Jones went tumbling. The Times Square bomber almost made his escape despite being on the “no fly” list. NY Giants and “Dancing with the Stars” own Lawrence Taylor was caught with a prostitute who was under-age. BP’s attempt to cap the oil spill was delayed. Apparently, the flooding in Nashville is incredibly bad and being largely ignored.
So, to answer hawaiipetphotos.com lead question: YES, THIS HAS BEEN A VERY STRANGE DAY!
Thankfully, in Hawaii, we are anticipating this weekend’s Hawaii Pet Expo.
Hawaii Pet Expo will be held Saturday and Sunday at The Neal Blaisdell Center Exhibition Hall. The annual event will run 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 8 and 9. The Hawaii Pet Expo is unique because so many furry friends are in attendance. The promoters truly celebrate the bond of human and pet.
Hawaiipetphotos.com will have a booth. Come, stop by and say hello. Pets are truly the answer to weird days like today.

I have had a wonderful year building my pet photography business here in Hawaii. I am grateful to all the wonderful furry friends and their parents who I have gotten to know. My website http://www.hawaiipetphotos.com along with the wonderful pet photos I have taken has been a great source of pride . I have literally put hundreds of hours of hard work and all of my passion into my business . I have spent even more hours donating my time and services to Hawaii’s many charitable organizations. I have been fortunate to become very successful in a very short time. And I am most grateful for that.
But, now all those efforts are being threatened. It seems as though a lesser known part-time photographer on this island has come up with a domain name one letter off from mine. Coincidence, I don’t think so. I have never been a fan of riding on someone else’s coat-tails. What sense of accomplishment do you have if you don’t do it yourself. So don’t be fooled!
“Hawaii pet photo” is not Deb McGuire’s www.hawaiipetphotos.com. Remember don’t forget the “S” in photos. That’s hawaiipetphotos.com, HawaiiPetPhotos.com, HAWAIIPETPHOTOS.COM!
