Hawaii Kai Dog Park is a part of our lives. We spend at least one day each weekend at the park… MANGO LOVES THE PARK. So, although we had supported the 6th and 7th Hawaii Kai Dog Walk, the 8th Annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk was very special. This is Mango’s park, and she will soon introduce it to her adopted brother Blarney (more to follow on Blarney, later).
Because the Hawaii Kai Dog Walk is a “first come” for the vendors, we were up at 4:30 a.m. THAT IS WAY TOO EARLY. The entire McGuire family was up at 4:30 a.m. Choke down some expedient nourishment, shave some bristly beard, add a little makeup, load the truck, and on the road. AND, WE WERE LATE!!!! People beat us to the park. Some were already set up.
We prepped our display so that the assembly would be efficient. We had help.
Kudos and Mahalo to Theresa Donnelly, Toby Long, One of the members of the “Cherry Blossom Court,” Fish, and the very special Wahine of the K9 Kokua. Theresa Donnelly is an advocate and principle of Hawaii Military Pets. Toby is the husband of Mary Long who is editor-in-chief of Hawaii Pet Magazine. The “Cherry Blossom Court” have supported the Hawaii Kai Dog Walk for years. Fish was a volunteer with Hui ‘Ilio, the sponsors of the walk and the park. And, last but not least, the K9 Kokua are a group of INCREDIBLY SPECIAL WOMEN with a very special mission to the homeless and their pets.
Theresa and Toby helped with our canopy. The Cherry Blossom Princess took Mango when we were putting the booth again. AWESOME! Fish… THANK YOU, FISH. Fish was absolutely essential to our set up of the canopy. When the Cherry Blossom Princess had top return to her duties, fish took Mango. THANK YOU, FISH! And finally, the K9 Kokua took care of Blarney (more to follow on Blarney, later).
As to the walk, as always, we saw old friends and met new ones.
HAWAII‘S FAVORITE PET PHOTOGRAPHER, OAHU BASED DEB MCGUIRE PET PHOTOGRAPHER, INC. AND HAWAIIPETPHOTOS.COM SPENT THIS SUNDAY JUNE 5, 2011 AT THE HAWAII KAI DOG PARK AS A SPONSOR OF THE HAWAII KAI DOG WALK.
Like most Oahu residents, particularly Windward Oahu residents, we spent Saturday night and Sunday morning in a ridiculous deluge with a light show reminiscent of the best Disney offers. In other words, the 4:30 wakeup came far too early and with far too much water in our bedrooms.
STOP! This is not about the storm or about the water in the front and middle rooms. This is the story of the seventh annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk .
The Hawaii Kai Dog Walk benefits the Hawaii Kai Dog Park and raises community awareness about the need for more dog parks on Oahu. OK, but the most obvious fun piece is the opportunity for dogs and their people to exercise and socialize.
For me, the fun part is catching up with friends, furry and otherwise. Among the furry friends, we saw O’Dell and Hastings, Juneau and Lohelani, and Seri. On the human side, Drs. Joe and Mariel Edhlund of Gentle Vets Hawaii… of Hawaii Kai had a display for the first time (we provided photos to decorate their waiting room and exam rooms). It’s always great to see Erin from DogWalkers, Etc. and Mary (and Toby) from Hawaii Pet Magazine.
BTW, we came home and vaccuumed and dug our house out. OH! I wasn’t going to address the storm and water in the house… Does that include the garage?
More about the Hui ‘Ilio Hawaii, Guardians of Hawaii Kai Dog Park and sponsor of Hawaii Kai Dog Walk:
Hui ‘Ilio Hawai’i (the Hawaii Dog Group) was founded to promote safe and friendly places for dogs and their people to play, and to promote responsible dog ownership. Our initial reason for organizing was to establish the Hawaii Kai Dog Park. Now that the park is a reality, we continue to support the park as the adoptive “park partners” by recruiting and training volunteer park rangers, and by sponsoring clean-up days and additional park improvements. Our ongoing goals are to help other dog groups get approval for parks in their respective districts, enhance the opportunities for dogs to get proper exercise and socialization, and to promote the licensing, vaccination, and good-behavior training of dogs.
Sunday, Hui ‘Ilio Hawai’I will host the 7th annual Hawaii Kai Dog Walk which begins and ends at the Hawaii Kai Dog Park.
This will be Deb McGuire Pet Photographer, Inc. and HawaiiPetPhotos.com’s second year to have a booth. We love the event. The dogs and their people get a chance to exercise and socialize and enjoy the morning in Hawaii Kai.
There are door prizes and gift bags for the pre-registered participants. We have once again donated to the cause.
