HawaiiPetPhotos Celebrates Mr. September

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

“Mr. September” for the Hawaiian Humane Society Calendar is Kyle. Oahu’s own, Deb McGuire, proudly snapped the photo that was chosen by the Humane Society Calendar Committee.

Kyle is a rescue kitty who proudly accompanies his Mother to many local pet events in his cat stroller.  He lives in Honolulu with his adopted brothers and sisters.

Kyle’s family is very proud.  The honor is absolutely well deserved, not just because Kyle is beautiful, but because of the countless hours that his Mother dedicates to the Hawaiian Humane Society Cat House.  She is there every day.  She cuddles, feeds, cleans poop and does her best to find homes for all the homeless felines.  She has such a huge heart.

Deb McGuire and HawaiiPetPhotos.com congratulate Kyle and his family.  September is indeed a special month.

Oahu Pet Photography and a blue-eyed doxie

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Her name is Reiko(which means grateful/thankful child in Japanese). She has the most amazing blue eyes on a funny little dachshund body. I first met her at the 2010 Hawaii Wiener Derby. Enjoy the pictures below.

BOOK’ER, DAN’O! Lindsay Goes to Jail!

Wednesday, July 21st, 2010

We are devastated!

For weeks, like many, we were anticipating the photos of the ridiculously foolish Lindsay Lohan being shackled and hauled away to the “Paris Hilton Celebrity Isolation Cell.”  Today, Judge Marsha Revel inhumanely denied us that satisfaction.  Tabloid journalism built this moment up, and a judge, who had no reason to be nice to the spoiled former Disney starlet, had the cameras turned off to preserve Miss Lohan’s dignity.  WHAT ABOUT US?!

Then, to add to the injury, we learned that Lindsay’s lockup will impact her upcoming projects.  UPCOMING PROJECTS?!  Who was the Hollywood genius who felt that was a brilliant move?

So, for those who have awaited the shots of Lindsay in non-fashion bracelets, Hawaiipetphotos.com offers a Chihuahua substitute.  The deal is the puppy is smarter.

Hawaii Pet Photography Released From Purgatory!!!

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

Three days…three days of stress and confusion caused by the Chinese invasion of our site. Hawaiipetphotos.com’s blog was hit by malware. Unfortunately, the bad code struck on the holiday weekend, and resolution was not fast. Once everyone returned to work, the clean up and restoration of our site’s credibility was restored in a few hours. Kudos to the folks at CMD, WordPress, and Google for their hardwork. We learned so much this weekend.

One of the things that was so awesome was the attention that our part-time competitors paid to our hardship. They actually helped to drive our google ratings even higher. When their identities were revealed as we attempted to clean up the mess, we were so grateful that they cared enough to follow our plight. Hawaiipetphotos was flattered actually. You know who you are in Aiea, Kailua, Honolulu and the North Shore. Who knew that your website icons would ride along with your IP addresses? Hmmm, you might want to work on that.

If we had not been hacked this weekend, this blog would have focused only on our Saturday shoot at Hickam AFB. We love the venue and this weekend’s puppy dog was absolutely a joy to photograph. We have had multiple sessions at Hickam and the venues and furry friends have all been wonderful.

REALITY: Lindsay Lohan’s going to prison… Bethenny Frankel did look like a Disco Ball at her Shower (her quote not mine)… Jillian and Ed are the latest “Bachelorette” disaster (maybe she is ready to take back Jake)… Chris, what’s up with that “we don’t care about the dog” stuff on the Jake and Vienna reunion… Tiger Woods imitated a golfer this past weekend as his divorce details leaked in gossip media.

Hawaiipetphotos.com is thrilled to be out of Purgatory.

HELLO HAWAII!!! FIREWORKS SCARE PETS!

Saturday, July 3rd, 2010

Hawaii Pet photographer Deb McGuire's own Sham-Rock finds the whole Oahu firework thing disturbing!ONE DAY!!!  One Day until the second loudest night on the Hawaii calendar.  After New Years, the 4th of July on Oahu is insane.  PETS ARE NOT FANS!

Hawaii legislators debate legal (and illegal) fireworks as the biennial celebration of noise quickly approaches.

Without jumping on an anti-firework soapbox, I remind only that our pets hear better than we, two-legged humans do…THEY DON’T LIKE THE LOUD BANGS!

So here are some helpful hints:

1.  Keep your pets indoors.  OK, I know.  This is Hawaii…

2.  Create a calming environment.  Talk to your pet.  Let them know that the pets are in charge and that you know, that they know that when the decibel level reaches its highest level, it is time for a puppy or kitty massage.

3.  If you are using blasting caps and dynamite to mark your festive fourth, PLEASE keep your pets away…Put them in your Oahu Pet Bunker.  That way when you and your human family members have been vaporized by your newly invented MOTHER OF ALL BACKYARD BOMBS, your pet will survive to mourn your passing.

OAHU PET PHOTOGRAPHY AND REALITY TV

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

Hawaiipetphotos.com intentded to resist comment on the latest reality TV noise (Remember, we have the latest and not-so-greatest playing in the background here at Casa Del Pet Photography).  Then, last season’s Bachelor Jake Pavelka broke up with “fiancee,” Vienna.

OK…so, resistance was futile.

Putting Jake and Vienna on the proverbial back burner, the Iceland excursion by the current Bachelorette brought back funny memories.  When my husband was stationed in North Carolina, he was assigned a mission flying from Keflavik in Iceland.  I accompanied him.  Two of our best days on the isalnd involved animals.  We spent one day dog-sledding on the glacier.  On another adventure, like Ali Fedotowsky and her boys, we went horseback riding on the lava fields.  We wore the silly riding hats…just like ABC’s casts.  We were freezing our rears off and we ended our day in the Blue Lagoon.  That is where the similarities end.

Everything started off fine.  The horses were reluctant to leave the barn on such a cold (February) morning.  We headed out at a leisurely pace.  The farther we moved from the paddock area, the more comfortable the horses appeared to be.  My horse disguised her true intentions.  When our guide was distracted and without warning, my horse bolted back toward the barn.  Our guide pursued.  I arrived, then the guide arrived, then my husband’s riderless horse.

“OMG (edited for modernism), where is Tim?”

“He’s in the lava field.”

“OMG, is he OK?”

“I don’t know, but he was laughing.”

Tim’s excuse:  ”When we were in the middle of the lava field, I went down and left, and the horse went up and right.  I landed on my butt.”

We went to the Blue Lagoon to warm our frozen joints and to heal an aching posterior.

JAKE AND VIENNA

Well..SURPRISE…they will not be going to the altar and eternal wedded bliss is not in their future.

From the drama of his return in the previous season’s “Bachelorette” to his appearance on this season’s “Dancing With The Stars,” Jake sends the signals that say, “I want to be a star!”

So, this Oahu Pet Photographer suggests that both Jake and Vienna get a pet.  Something sweet that requires only the amount of attention that career reality stars can give.

As to “The Bachelor” and “The Bachelorette,” fellow Sunny Hills alum (Go Lancers!), Mike Fleiss must be extremely proud of the show’s success…which is fortunately measured in market share and not in successful marriages.

HAWAIIPETPHOTOS.COM IS NOT PULLING FOR TIGER!

Sunday, June 20th, 2010
Hawaii Pet Photographer is not a fan of this Tiger

Tarnished Tiger on the Prowl

Although Deb McGuire, pet photographer, is not a golf fan, the husband has been a golfer from the age of 10 (though his abilitiies have deteriorated due to Operation Iraqi Freedom injuries).  Until last November, we were both impressed by the Tiger.  Now, we find ourselves wishing close putts to miss and golf shots to take unlucky bounces.

The Tiger has made a Saturday run at Pebble Beach.  Dustin, Graeme, Ernie, Gregory, Phil, Ryo,  or Alex need to find the inner strength to take down the Tiger.

If justice is served, the Tiger never again challenges the records of the Bear.

For now, HawaiiPetPhotos.com will focus on these Tigers:

Hawaii Pet Photos: Snakes and Puppy Dog Tails

Friday, June 11th, 2010

As I write this, the cats are being silly.  Shammy has snuggled up to the copy machine and sleeps on his back with all four paws in the air.  Magic has climbed inside a shopping bag, rolled into a ball, and fallen asleep.

Someone snuck a python into Hawaii.  The 9-foot snake is an illegal alien… of the scaly variety.  The owner turned over his contraband reptile under Hawaii’s amnesty law.  The discovery and removal of non-indigenous species is absolutely essential to the preservation of Oahu (and all the Hawaiian Islands) eco-system.

While the snake is currently at the Honolulu Zoo, that home is temporary.  The snake is female.  The zoo is allowed only two non-venomous snakes by permit.  Once a mainland home is found, she will go their in order to insure that she births no keiki here.

Other Pet News (HawaiiPetPhotos is downloading Mr. Pigglesworth Photos):

Missed the Pet Blessing.  This passed Sunday, June 6th, the annual “Pet Blessing” was held at the Hawaii Kotohira Jinsha-Hawaii Dazaifu Tenmangu.  Since we had just done the Hawaii Kai Pet Walk and since Magic and Sham-Rock would not have appreciated being dragged out of their sunbeams, we bypassed the event.  Although given the look and the position that Shammy is currently in, we probably should have gone.  Would a blessing have cured his “frenzies?”  Magic wants to know.

Mr. Pigglesworth is very cute!!

Good-bye to the “Honolulu Advertiser:”

When the staff said good-bye, Leslie Kawamoto wrote the following about her blog and Sunday column “Island Tails:”

“The last two years I’ve written a blog and Sunday column, Island Tails, about my favorite subject — pets! I thoroughly enjoyed writing about all kinds of animals, their special owners and the many animal advocates in the community. I will miss hearing from readers who would share tales about their pets. Some stories were sad, some heartwarming.”

Leslie had included Deb McGuire Photography (hawaiipetphotos.com) in a past “Island Tails.”  Another columnist/blogger, Charlie Meminger is a friend and neighbor.  We send  a heartfelt “Aloha” to all the Advertiser staff and employees.  This is a tough time to be looking for something new.  Our prayers are with you.

Deb McGuire Photographs Walk and Wag 5K at Hickam AFB, Hawaii

Hickam AFB "Walk and Wag" 5K

Hickam AFB invited Deb McGuire Photography to be a part of the Base’s first annual “Walk and Wag.”  The canine plus human 5K walk/run (mostly walk) was held at the Fort Kam waterfront.  After the physical stuff was complete, a couple friendly competitions like “what doggie looks most like its owner” and “which pup wore the best costume” were judged by the Hawaiian Humane Society.

Shammy has repositioned and is now in a ball, sleeping.

OAHU PET PHOTOGRAPHER LAMENTS: THE SWALLOWS HAVE BYPASSED CAPISTRANO

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

HawaiiPetPhotos.com tuned into NPR’s “All Things Considered” during an oddly timed foray into Honolulu drive time traffic.  As if by kismet, the first story up after my channel change was: “Famed Swallows Find New Home in Country Club.”  I nearly hit the car in front of me.

No, I was not upset that they had chosen to move to a country club.  THEY BYPASSED THE SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO MISSION.  The mission was famous for two things:

First, for over 200 years, the swallows have migrated to the mission from their winter home in Argentina.

Second, my husband and I married at the mission.

Ordinarily, Deb McGuire Photography does not suffer from paranoid anxieties, but consider this, the restaurant where my husband and I met blew up…literally exploded.  And now this.

Anyone know a good Kahuna that could chase away the evil spirits.

The swallows’ home this year is the Vellano Country Club in Chino Hils, CA.  Link to the NPR story: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=127600216

Hawaii Pet Photos: “WHAT DO YOU MEAN THEY CAN TAKE THEIR CATS TO COLLEGE?!”

Wednesday, June 9th, 2010
Deb McGuire Photography's own Black Magic Scarlet McGuire

Kitty Cat Genius Magic McGuire

Finishing Hawaiipetphotos nightly indulgence, surfing the World Wide Web, I decided to “Google” pets on the “Google News” pages.  At the top of the list: “Answers on Pets in Dorms.”  What?  Pet in Dorms?!  Of course, I “click-it.”

The article is a blog from the NY TIMES.  The article confuses me because the author writes about herself in the third person.  Apparently, pet-friendly colleges exist for today’s university bound adol-e-dults.

I read the whole thing.  I clicked some links and ended up on another web-article titled Top 10 Pet-Friendly Colleges.  Will do this Letterman style (in reverse):

10.  Lehigh University, Bethlehem, PA: “Located in the Lehigh Valley, Lehigh University has a pet-friendly Greek system! One dog or cat is allowed to live in each fraternity and sorority house on campus. The pet must live indoors and not disrupt the activities of the house. The owners are also responsible for any damage or costs caused by the pet.”

9. SUNY at Canton, NY: “SUNY Canton established its pet friendly policy in 1996. Mohawk Hall, otherwise know as the “pet wing,” allows a maximum of 48 pets. Pets are permitted to travel freely in the wing while their owner is present. Dogs and snakes are not permitted, and animals must be spayed or neutered to live on campus.”

8. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (YES, the MIT), Cambridge, MASS:  “MIT is one of the world’s premiere technical institutions. The school allows feline companions in four of the university dormitories as long as the owner has the written consent of their roommates. The cats must be approved by the dorm’s “Pet Chair,” have all their shots, be registered with the campus housing office and neutered as well.”

7. University of Idaho, Moscow, ID: “The University of Idaho is the flagship school of the Idaho public university system and also the oldest. Cats and birds are permitted in all of the university’s four apartment-style housing buildings. Fish are allowed in all dorms. A maximum of two cats and/or birds are allowed in one residence. Pets must be considered appropriately suited to apartment living and must not be aggressive or nervous.”

6. University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana: “The oldest and largest school in the Illinois state college system, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign allows students staying in the Ashton Woods housing unit to keep “companion animals” such as dogs, cats and rabbits, as well as fish. Students may keep up to two pets per apartment, and must comply with all state and local pet laws.”

5. California Institute of Technology, Pasadena, CA: “Caltech is a leading technical university and is the academic home of NASA’s jet propulsion laboratory. And students can bring their cats with them on campus! All dorms allow cats, as well as small caged and aquatic animals, but rabbits and dogs are not permitted. Animal lovers can also join the Caltech Animal Team (CAT), a ‘club devoted to caring for homeless and abandoned animals, especially cats, who live on the Caltech campus and nearby grounds.’”

4. Principa College, Ellsah, IL: “Located on two campuses in the St. Louis area, Principa College has seven dorms and university apartments that allow pets. Students at this small college for Christian Scientists may bring dogs, cats, rabbits, caged animals, and aquatic pets. Some of the dorms allow up to two un-caged pets, but many do have size limitations.”

3. Washington & Jefferson College, Washington, PA: “This liberal arts school in the suburbs of Pittsburg allows students to bring their family pets along to school and live in the “Pet House” dorm. There are some breed restrictions, but Washington & Jefferson College permits cats, dogs less than 40 pounds, small birds, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, turtles and fish. Other animals may be permitted on a case-by-case basis. Pets must be spayed or neutered, have been owned by the students’ family for at least a year and registered.”

2. Stephens College, Columbia, MO: “Stephens College, founded in 1833, is one of the best women’s colleges in the nation. Located in the center of Missouri, it shares the city with the University of Missouri and Columbia College. All students are required to live on campus, and one dorm is the designated “pet dorm.” Spaces for pets are limited, but residents can have dogs, cats, hamsters and guinea pigs. Students must apply to live on a pet floor and follow policy guidelines.”

And the number one pet friendly school:  Eckerd College, St. Petersburg, FL: “Located on the gulf coast of Florida, Eckerd College offers four pet-friendly, air-conditioned dorm “clusters.” Students are allowed to have cats and dogs, as long as they are under 40 pounds, as well as snakes and fish. Students must comply with requirements and can’t leave pets on campus during breaks.”

Deb McGuire Photography's own Sham-Rock

Equally Brilliant Shammy McGuire

So, I read the list, and the first thing that jumps out at me is “WHERE ARE MY TROJANS?”  Or for that matter where is Notre Dame, Harvard, Yale, Duke, Stanford or Princeton?  Second, I showed the list to my MENSA-Geek-Boy husband…and he had heard of only half the schools.  So, although I am jealous of the liberties that today’s generation are enjoying, I am concerned that this list is not longer.

BOTTOM-LINE: My cats are smart enough to go any college they might want.  Let’s end the discrimination…EDUCATION RIGHTS FOR ALL THE FURRY FRIENDS!
